How to check video bitrate

Bitrate is simply data divided by time. This checker takes the file size, multiplies by 8 to get bits, and divides by the duration read from the video metadata: bitrate = file size × 8 ÷ duration. That gives the overall bitrate — the number that actually determines upload time and storage.

Frame rate is estimated by sampling frame timestamps during a short muted playback, then snapping to the nearest standard rate (24, 30, 60…). Everything runs in your browser; no upload, no server, no queue.

Video bitrate checker FAQ

How do I check the bitrate of a video?

Drop the file into this checker. It divides the file size by the duration to get the overall bitrate (video plus audio) and reads the resolution from the video metadata — all locally in your browser.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is analyzed entirely in your browser using the HTML5 video element. Nothing leaves your device, so it works with confidential footage too.

What is a good bitrate for 1080p video?

Around 6-8 Mbps for typical 1080p30 content with H.264, and 10-12 Mbps for 1080p60 or high-motion footage. Use our bitrate calculator to get a number for your exact settings.

Why does the checker show overall bitrate instead of video-only bitrate?

Browsers expose duration and resolution, but not per-stream bitrates. The overall number (video plus audio) is what determines upload time and file size, and audio is usually only 128-320 kbps of it.
